Just like a new coat of paint, sisal rugs can instantly transform a room through their natural color and subtle design. Sisal rugs are made of a sustainably harvested natural fiber that is derived from the leaves of a cactus plant. Sisal is one of the stronger natural fibers making an ideal for use in rugs. Natural fibers are anti-static and non-toxic which make them a popular choice for using in your home.
The appeal of sisal rugs is linked in large part to the natural look of the sisal fibers. Sisal rugs are typically available in a variety of earth tones making them a fitting complement to great rooms, dens and dining rooms. Sisal rugs are not intended for outdoor use. They are ideal for use in living rooms, entry halls, home offices and family rooms. As the natural fibers of sisal rugs will absorb moisture, avoid placing the rugs in places where there is excess moisture such as bathrooms. The natural texture provides a massaging touch to feet and may not be appropriate for rooms where you sit upon the floor.
Maintaining sisal rugs is relatively easy. Unlike cloth rugs, the natural fibers in sisal rugs do not absorb dirt. Dirt is instead trapped in between the grass fibers. To keep sisal rugs looking their best, they should be vacuumed regularly to keep them free from dirt. The natural grass-like fibers naturally absorb humidity and may need some additional maintenance for dry climates to maintain their shape.
Sisal Rug Varieties
Sisal rugs are made of 100% sisal and can also be found in a combination of sisal and wool. Sisal and wool combination rugs provide a softer feel with the durability of sisal.
Sisal rugs come with a variety of backings. Some rug designs feature a non-slip backing so the rug stays in place. Another common backing is jute.
